Events 2011-2012

Halloween Party - Sunday, October 16, 12-1:45pm OR 2:00-3:45pm
Carolyn's Place: 27 Spruce Cres
For students only. Students come dressed in their Halloween costumes & play a Halloween piece for everyone. Afterwards we enjoy Halloween treats and go on a tour of Keri & Carolyn's Haunted House! But don't worry - there is a not scary part for those of you who do not like to be scared! (Or you can just stay in the kitchen with the treats.)

Christmas Recital - SUNDAY, December 11, 3pm OR 5pm
LOCATION: Christian Reformed Church of St. Albert, 12 Gate Avenue

**PARKING** During the recital, you may park in any spot on the Church lot including handicapped & trasit parking spots.

Students: Please dress semi formal. NO refreshments will be served after the recital.

The Christmas Recital is 1 of 2 annual recitals we have for parents to watch their children perform in a semi-formal setting.

We encourage each student to memorize their music & play it the best they can. BUT, if you are really nervous in front of crowds or you just dont have your piece memorized yet, you are welcome to play with your music.

Playing in a recital gives you a goal to work towards. Quite often you will find students practicing like crazy the last week or so before the recital because they know they have to play it for an audience. If only students would practice this much EVERY week of the year!

Technique Olympics - Sunday, February TBA, 1-2:30pm
Come join us in a super fun afternoon of scale, triad & arpeggio playing! Don't worry, it's nothing like practicing tecnhique at home.
Play on teams in this mildly competitive setting to see which team has practiced their scales the most!
YOU choose 2 keys to practice (that's 2 pages of your scale book)

St. Albert Rotary Music Festival - various dates in April
Location: various churches in St. Albert
The St. Albert Rotary Music Festival is an event where students get to perform a piece of music in front of an adjudicator. The adjudicator writes down a few comments & suggestions on how to improve the piece & then after the class gets to speak to the students about it. Sometimes there is enough time for the student to go back to the piano to try out some of the new ideas.

Students of all ages and levels are welcome to participate in the festival. You will be placed in a class of students who are the same level as you and close to the same age.

You are allowed to bring guests (family, friends) to watch you perform if you wish. Your teacher will also try be there.

Pool Party - Saturday, June 4, 6-7pm
Fountain Park Pool, St. Albert
For: All students who reach the goal & their families.
(Don't worry, we will make sure you reach your goal.)
Students: You may each bring 1 friend if you reach the extra goal.

We will have access to the Small Pool, the Leisure Pool, the big green waterslide, the hot tub, and saunas.

All children 6 and under must have a parent in the water with them.

This event is to reward students for their hard work at completing the required amount of Buck-a-Books.

A Buck-a-Book is a music book other than your regular lesson book that you take home and play through from start to finish at least one time. You can choose any book from the lending library but it would be wise to choose one that is a bit easier than your level. Your teacher can help you find appropriate books. *You also get $1 in piano money for every book you play through!

The purpose of Buck-a-Books are to gain confidence & fluency in reading music. The more music you play through, the more comfortable you will be with reading music.

GOALS:
Once you have completed at least 15 Buck-a-Books you may attend the Pool Party.
If you have completed at least 25 Buck-a-Books you may also bring a friend the Pool Party.

Aim for at least 1 Buck-a-Book per week or 2 & you will be right on track.

RCM Exams - various dates in January or June
Red Willow Church, St. Albert
Entry Deadline: Early November for January & early March for June.
Fees: $100 & up (depending on the grade)

RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) exams are open to students who are in Grade 1 or higher. Exams give students a feeling of completion. Also, these exams are great for students who are very goal motivated. Exams are optional and you can take them any year you choose. (You don't have to do every one. Ex. you could take a gr. 2 exam & then a few years later a gr. 5 exam...). If you like taking an exam for every grade, that is ok too!

For an exam you need to prepare 4-7 pieces of music (depending on your grade) which should be memorized. You will also have to play a few scales & do some sight reading & ear training excercises. You will be doing all of these things during your regular lessons throughout the year. You have all year to perpare for this exam so it is not as much work as you think.

When you get to the exam center only you will be allowed to be in the room with the examiner (who is NOT your teacher). Your parents will have to wait in the designated waiting area.

Everyone who takes an exam will receive a written assessment by the examiner & an overall mark. You will get your assessment & mark a few weeks after the exam.

Any student who takes an exam & receives a mark of 80% or higher is eligible for a SAPTA Scholarship of $25 cash & a $25 gift certificate at Innovations Music in St. Albert. There is a winner for the higest mark above 80% in each grade level. Only students of SAPTA teachers are eligble to enter students for this scholarship. (Yes, your teacher is a SAPTA member!)

Please register early so there is enough time to choose & learn your music on time.

Once you RSVP for an exam your teacher will confirm that you will be ready on time & then you will have to officially register for your exam on the RCM website. If you are uncomfortable using your credit card online, your teacher can register for you & you can just pay your teacher.

CNCM Northern Lights Star Performance Exams
- various dates in June
Location: somewhere in Edmonton TBA
Entry Deadline: December 1 for February, April 1 for June
Fees: $35-$40 (depending on the level)

CNCM (Canadian National Conservatory of Music) exams are optional. They are available for students in first year piano to Grade 6 for any age level including adults. The exams are named after Canadian composers rather than grades so you don't feel out of place if you are a teenager or adult playing at a beginner level. This type of exam is perfect for students who would like a goal/challenge but may not have the time to prepare all the additional musicianship skills necessary in a RCM exam. For the Star Performance exam you only need to prepare FOUR own choice pieces. That means you can pick whichever 4 pieces you would like to play. Memory is recommended but not required. That's it - NO scales, sight reading or ear training. However, you do need to prepare a program & write a short introduction for each piece (that you will have to say during your exam).

The unique thing about this exam is that your play your exam like a recital! Part of the exam requirement is to design & print program for all your invited guests of what you will be playing (beginners make a poster instead). You also get to invite WHOEVER you want to WATCH you play your exam! You will have to introduce your pieces by talking a tiny bit about the composer & the piece. After you play each piece your audience claps for you (which makes you feel great).

Ask your teacher for more details or flip through the syllabus: http://www.cncm.ca/resources/Music+For+Everyone+Programs+Syllabus.pdf

The Year End Recital is the second of 2 annual recitals we have for parents to watch their children perform in a semi-formal setting.
